Help! Please can you guys give me some advice on which Linux distro to use? I have Ubuntu 10.10, but I want to also try a different one. Please tell me which one you use and why? If you wont mind....of course ;) I know @feniksa likes Gentoo? Is this a good one? Its harder to use right? Im asking here because you're all very clever with this sort of thing :] I hope I did translate this right =D

I'm using ubuntu 10.04 but it doesn't differ much from 10.10. I have downloaded 11.04 but has not decided for installing it yet. First I'd like to install it on my desktop just to take a look. Don't wanna install it on my notebook because of unity and it's usually better to wait a little after the release.

I'll tell you when I check what 11.04 looks like

but backtrack its a fully functional OS right? I know its good for hacking wireless networks too ;) I was just wondering what its like to use as a main OS :]

@Tara, if you want, you can try gentoo. But be careful, to use gentoo must be familiar with console, and do not afraid standard linux utils like "ls, cp, mount/umount, bla bla bla :-)", also you need to know basics how compilations of sources works. Because when you install gentoo, you will install it from scratch,from sources. I think, if you have a lot of time and you very crazy you can try it.

You can try OpenSuse or SLES 11

@feniksa Thanks hun :] Whats the difference between the minimal distro and others (Gentoo)? Just had a quick look at OpenSuse....it looks really good :]

@Tara, when you install some "fat" distributive (Fedora for example or Suse/Ubuntu) you will have a lot of packages. For example, minimum installation of Fedora will cause to install 680 packets (not so minimal). For old hardware such distributions too fat. If i have old hardware i want to install only basic packets (like kernel, busybox, and some very tiny graphic system like XFCE). For example, such minimal distribution like tinyCore after installation take 50 Mb of disk space. If i want to install some additional packet, like mc, i just click install mc and all. Also, if you want to have some fun, you can try tinyCore or SystemRescueCD :-)

@feniksa I now see I must install Tarball3...amongst other things =D My hardware on this Computer is not too old....

Help lol....I decided to try a few different distros on my VM to see which one I like best.

I decided one of them would be Gentoo. So I got as far as ''''# emerge gentoo-sources'' 7.b Here and my VM crashed :(

Can I just resume from where it crashed (or from ''''6.a. Chrooting) or will I need to do the whole thing again?

I never had to do all this with Ubuntu :(

Thanks so much :] Its quite a big job though so we must find a good time. Can I ask what time zone are you in? Im GMT +8. How long do you think it should take? I have msn, skype ICQ etc etc. Which IRC? I wish we had IRC on Stickr =D
